Justice delayed is justice denied

The dire water situation at the Harare Magistrates’ Courts has forced authorities to suspend afternoon court sessions raising fears that constitutional rights of detained suspects were being trampled upon.

The latest development is also likely to create a huge backlog of cases.

Harare provincial magistrate Mishrod Guvamombe yesterday declined water problems.

“We are having water problems here and the staff from the Ministry of Public Works are on the ground attending to the problem,” Guvamombe said on Thursday.

“As a precautionary measure, we are forced to provisionally suspend the afternoon court sessions because we do not have running water which is a requirement at any institution. We are however not closing the courts completely and will be sitting from morning until midday.”

The situation will impact heavily on the completion of court cases since many accused persons would have to be remanded to later dates.

The court complex is now a ticking time bomb with all the 35 toilets not functioning.
