Classical music prodigy stages show

-

Very few Zimbabweans enjoy or understand classical music but upcoming musician Donald Chifamba has taken it upon himself to popularise the genre.

Local entertainment company Mukarati Music will tomorrow host the musician, who has spent five years in South Africa pursuing as degree in classical cello music, at Alliance Française.

It will be the musician’s first show in the country and has been dubbed “Donald Chifamba in Dichotomous Synergy”. On show would be a rather unusual combination of a purely classical instrument applied to jazz music in the hands of a classically trained master.

“The cello is typically known to make up part of the bass section of the orchestra as well as for its soothing solo tones which over the years have been applied by great composers,” said Mukarati Music director Tinashe Mukarati.

He said in “Dichotomous Synergy” the cello is used in its traditional role and also outside the common context.

Mukarati said the concert would be a rare and special show as classical cello was unfortunately not very popular in Zimbabwe at the moment, although about 10 years ago there were numerous reputable cellists in the country.

“Friday’s show will be quite a treat as Donald teams up with a few local surprise guests, all of whom are among the top musicians in the country in various capacities,” said Mukarati.

He said Chifamba had spent the last 5 years studying classical cello at the University of KwaZulu Natal in Durban and only a month after his return home he was ready for his first show.

Mukarati said the audience should attend the concert geared for an unusual, exciting and soothing trip down memory lane as Chifamba would play some popular selections from yesteryear hits in a new style.

Chifamba has so far performed with various ensembles that are both classical and contemporary, including the Durban City Orchestra, 16 Strings and Fantasia String Quartet as well as contemporary artists Shamon and Shannon Hope.
