Club Shanga, 2010 winners of the Chibuku Road to Fame music talent search competition, are expected to start recording their debut album with Zimbabwe Music Corporation next week.
Club Shanga received a recording contract from Delta Beverages as one of their prizes for winning last year’s edition of the competition.
They also pocketed $5 000 at the event which was held at Glamis Stadium in Harare.
Delta Beverages marketing manager Patricia Murambinda told NewsDay that the group was scheduled to start recording next week and was expected to launch the album at the end of February.
Club Shanga which was formed in 2007 in Marondera is also set to tour Europe for three months beginning in May since they are also the winners of the 2010 Music Crossroads Inter- Regional Finals (IRF) which were held in Tanzania.
They beat nine other groups including another Zimbabwean outfit, The Way (runners-up in the Zimbabwean finals) and groups from Malawi, Tanzania, Zambia and Mozambique.
As part of their prize at the IRF, Club Shanga received musical training and will this year tour Europe for three months and perform at various festivals, schools, theatre, night clubs and attend workshops. Mathius Bangure, Music Crossroads Zimbabwe director, said the group would leave for Europe on May 10.
“While in Europe, Club Shanga will tour Spain, Austria, Holland, Ireland and the UK. We are still in the process of negotiating with Germany and Finland so that the group tours there too,” said Bangure.
Club Shanga is a vibrant seven-piece group which plays a lively blend of Afrocentric music enhanced by melodious female voices.
The group has a distinctly Zimbabwean sound: danceable tunes played on modern and traditional instruments, strong vocals and a pulsating stage performance.
Club Shanga is a group of young, spirited and skilful artistes, made up of five male and two female musicians:
Farai Baramasimbe (lead vocals), Trust Matombo (keyboards), Musa Maruva (lead guitar), Vongai Makonde (drums), Aggabu T. Nyabinde (bass), Georginah Mutenda (backing vocals and percussion) and Perseverance Mataranyika (backing vocals and percussion).
