In politics, indeed as it is with all other facets of life, nothing lasts forever.
Those readers familiar with the history of Nazi Germany will clearly remember a certain fellow known as Joseph Goebbels.
Goebbels was a German politician and the Minister of Propaganda in Nazi Germany from 1933 to 1945.
A die-hard Adolf Hitler loyalist and confidante, Goebbels was well-known for his zealous oratory and notorious for his rabid anti-Semitism.
As Minister of Propaganda, he exerted totalitarian control over the media, arts and information in Nazi Germany. In that position, he perfected the Big Lie technique of propaganda.
Basically, this technique is based on the principle that a lie, if audacious enough and repeated enough times, will be believed by the masses.
Goebbels was not a fool; he was a highly educated man who earned a PhD from Heidelberg University in 1921, writing his doctoral thesis on 18th century romantic drama.
I have given some detail about the history of Goebbels because it is poignant, particularly in view of Zimbabwe’s political history in the last 40 years.
Ian Smith heavily relied on totalitarian control of the media in order to suppress and/or manipulate information.
We all know that the Rhodesia Broadcasting Corporation (RBC) was part of the illegal Smith regime’s propaganda machinery.
History has this nasty tendency of often repeating itself.
The present Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC), just like its predecessor the RBC, has staunchly remained under the fascist tendency of suppressing and manipulating information in order to uphold the fortunes of a political party that is in terminal decline, Zanu PF.
Just like the RBC before it, the ZBC has hopelessly failed to prop up the waning fortunes of its political masters. One of the finest propagandists in modern history, Goebbels, ferociously tried to prop up the waning fortunes of Nazi Germany in particular and Hitlerism in general but when it was time for change, Nazi Germany crumbled like a deck of cards.
A similar fate befell Smith’s racist and illegal regime. In similar fashion, Zanu PF is also doomed. The toiling masses of Zimbabwe have been taken for granted for too long.
From the pre-colonial, colonial and post-colonial nation state, the ordinary people of this great nation have, somehow, always experienced the hardships caused by tyranny, intolerance and general misgovernance.
Zimbabweans are tolerant but, most certainly, they are not docile.
You may bombard them with nauseating propaganda day in and day out; but they won’t be swayed by this tired and failed propaganda technique.
The Zanu PF propaganda jingles being played with annoying regularity daily on the Zanu PF-controlled ZTV and ZBC radio stations are doing immeasurable and untold damage to the already doomed political fortunes of the former ruling party.
We are students of history; we are students of political science and we are convinced that the Big Lie technique of propaganda will always fail.
As the legendary Robert Nesta Marley sings in one of his hit songs, Redemption Song, “you can fool some people some of the time but you can never fool all the people all of the time.”
Some of us have been amused and entertained by the overzealousness with which Zanu PF propagandists have tried to use the WikiLeaks phenomenon as a tool to lambast and denigrate Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai and the MDC that he leads.
Discredited and hare-brained political “analysts” have fallen over each other trying to portray Tsvangirai as having committed “treason” and some other such nefarious crimes.
We have studied the so-called WikiLeaks back to front and they are what they precisely are meant to be: opinions of various political and diplomatic functionaries of several governments in the world.
There has even been talk that Tsvangirai should be prosecuted for treason.
This is both political hogwash and legal lunacy.
It is intellectual hooliganism for any sane and right-thinking political analyst to even suggest that Tsvangirai should be prosecuted for treason because of the WikiLeaks phenomenon.
Any decent lawyer with a functional brain will advise you that there is no shred of competent and compellable evidence that the state can successfully rely on in order to prosecute Tsvangirai for treason as a result of the so-called WikiLeaks revelations.
The gallant people of Zimbabwe deserve better. They have suffered enough. They deserve real change and indeed, Tsvangirai and the MDC that he leads are the real “unstoppable machine”.
They are the only game in town and as time goes on, it will become more and more apparent. Change is coming and, indeed, change is inevitable.
