Under 19 cricket squad start preps for SA

The Zimbabwe Under-19 cricket squad has started preparations for an upcoming assignment in South Africa, where they will take part at the Cubs Week.

Team manager Nicholas Nsingo said the team would leave for South Africa on Sunday for a series of matches against their southern region neighbours until January 23.

“The team has already started intensifying preparations for the assignment in South Africa where they will play at the Cubs Week tournament before playing the hosts in a reciprocal tour after South Africa came here early this year,” said Nsingo.

At the Cubs Week, the Chris Harris-coached side will play against South African franchises’ most outstanding young players.

South African franchises like the Chevrolet Knights, the Nashua Titans, the Nashua Dolphins, Cape Cobras and the Highveld Lions will all filed their Under-19 teams for the tournament.

The Cricket South Africa (CSA) Under 19 Franchise Cubs Week features the best players who were recently selected from the Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Under-19 Cricket Week.

Once the six South African franchise regions select their best Under19 players to feature in the Cubs Week, the teams undergo intensive camps to prepare them for competition. After the Cubs Week the Zimbabwe Under-19 will then engage the hosts in five limited overs matches and two Pro20 matches.

The team has been preparing in earnest for the tournament at the Country Club as they will be using the tour to prepare for next year’s ICC Under-19 World Cup next year. The Namibian Under-19 team is also expected to take part at the tournament alongside Zimbabwe as the only junior national team at the tournament.

The Zimbabwe team will be hoping to get some revenge against the South Africans after they whitewashed by a well drilled Keaton Jennings captained South African side when it toured the country in June.
