Buscod Supermarket showed their commitment to sponsor the Southern Region Buscod Division One on Saturday when they bankrolled the awards ceremony for the soccer league to the tune of over $20 000 at a function that was held at Queens Sports Club.
Chicken Inn were crowned the Southern Region champions and walked away with a whopping $ 12 000 first prize award, floating shield and medals courtesy of the supermarket chain.
Their performance in Division One granted them a ticket to their maiden appearance in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) next year. General manager of Buscod, Collin Howes, said they were proud to be associated with the Division One league.
“It was a competitive season. We are proud to be sponsors of Division One. Congratulations to Chicken Inn on their success,” said Howes.
He said the company had seen the rewards of sponsoring the league. Individual prizes were awarded to outstanding players and oficials.
Former PSL player Njabulo Ncube walked away with $1 500 and a floating miniature trophy after being named top goalscorer of the year. He scored 21 goals to grab the award.
The coach of the year award went to Philani “Beefy” Ncube who also went home $1 500 richer after guiding Chicken Inn into the PSL.Victoria Falls-based side Sao Paulo and Ntabazinduna Prison TD were the joint winners of the team fair play award.
The two teams shared $1 000. Former Zifa chairman Vincent Pamire who was the guest of honour emphasised the need for football to have good leaders.
Speaking after the ceremony Southern Region chairman Gift Banda said they had a good season despite the challenges that they had faced.
