The Spanish Embassy, in collaboration with Children Performing Arts Workshop (Chipawo), will on Friday present a Spanish play translated into the Shona language titled The Great Theatre of the World, written by one of the most popular playwrights of the Spanish golden era, Pedro Calderon.
The Shona translation is titled Mutambo Wepanyika and will be showcased on Friday free of charge at the Zimbabwe College of Music.
“Calderon is known to be one of the most relevant playwrights of the Spanish literature and he shares with Cervantes (author of Don Quixote) the merit of putting Spanish literature at the summit of European literature in what is considered the golden age of Spanish culture of all times,” said the Spanish Embassy spokesperson, Marina Garcia.
She said in a statement that Mutambo Wepanyika was the only Spanish play translated and performed in Shona and it belonged to the sacramental genre and was a reflection on life, religion and death.
Garcia said the play was translated into Shona by a Spanish priest and first published in Zimbabwe in 1958.
She said the play was co-directed by popular local writers Clayton Ndlovu and Stephen Chifunyise with the assistance of Chipawo graduates, Simba Joseph and Belinda Mafute and was produced by Chipo Basopo.
