The Zimbabwe Under-20 side finished this year’s Cosafa Metropolitan championships on third place after they beat Madagascar 3-1 in a third place play-off match at the University of Botswana in Gaborone on Saturday.
Zimbabwe were beaten 1-0 by Zambia in the semi-final on Friday.
In the match against the islanders, regular scorer Denver Mukamba thrust the Young Warriors in the lead in the first half before Madagascar took over the show by pressurising the Taurai Mangwiro-coached side.
Madagscar were rewarded 11 minutes after Mukamba’s goal after a blinder of a shot by Florent Rajaoniasy who capitalised on the failure by George Chigova to clear the ball from danger.
Zimbabwe went two goals up after Mukamba grabbed his second goal of the day courtesy of a well-taken strike from inside the Madagascar penalty box.
Madagascar had the chance to draw level but captain Ando Nampoina’s header went wide. Zimbabwe survived another onslaught a minute later but an effort by Marchal was forced out for a corner kick.
The Young Warriors put the final nail on Madagscar’s coffin with a Willard Kalongonda header after Madagascar goal-minder Elysees Modenine spilled an in-swinging corner towards Kalongonda who headed home.
For their efforts, Zimbabwe were handed bronze medals by Ayanda Vilakazi, the Metropolitan brand and marketing manager, assisted by Dollor Nester, who is the Cosafa’s representative.
Mukamba was crowned man-of-the-match.
