A fruit-fetching mission ended tragically for a 25-year-old man after he was trampled to death by a giraffe in Nyanga.
Farai Gona (25), a security guard based at Ruparara Farm in Nyanga, died on the spot following the attack at the farm.
Manicaland police spokesperson Inspector Brian Makomeke told NewsDay yesterday that Gona and Nyemudzai Kadzingamiti encountered the animal on their way back from fetching fruits.
“The two had gone into the bush to look for fruits but on their way back they came across the animal which then advanced to attack them,” Makomere said.
“Kadzingamiti managed to escape from the incensed animal, but Gona failed to escape and the giraffe kicked him.
“He fell to the ground and the giraffe trampled on him until he died.”
After Kadzingamiti escaped he mobilised other farm workers who then rushed to the scene to scare the animal away.
They found the animal still trampling on Gona and he died before the villagers could save him, the policeman said.
