Mbira princess set for one-year Europe stint

The chilly climes of Scandinavia are set to be warmed up by the sultry sounds of Hope Masike, one of Zimbabwe’s leading songstresses of mbira fusion.

Hope has secured a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to spend a year in Norway sharing her knowledge of mbira music while sharpening her musical skills.

Over the course of the following year, she will be based at the prestigious Culture School of Fredrikstad (Kulturskolen iFredrikstad) in the Norwegian city of Fredrikstad.

“I will be going to Norway as a musician and a music teacher so I’ll be performing as well as teaching music,” said an excited Hope.

As a cultural ambassador for Zimbabwe, Hope said her previous regional and European tours have prepared her for this demanding role.

“As much as I will miss our beautiful country, I will use this opportunity to share our rich cultural heritage with the many people,” she said.

A hectic schedule will also see the diminutive singer collaborate with various European musicians in and around Norway.

In 2009 Hope Masike, released her self-titled debut album, from which a number of tracks made it onto local radio.

The mbira artist has described her revolutionary interpretation of traditional music as, “‘the new sound of mbira”.

Hope has promised a memorable farewell gift for her fans before she departs in January 2010, which has been facilitated by the Fredrikskopsat Programme.
