Arts enthusiasts will blow their vuvuzelas loud at the annual Ibumba International Festival in December, when sports and arts will come together during the festival’s football tournament.
The township-based festival will be held from December 15 to 22 under the theme “Live out loud”.
This is an expression of the way the organisers expect their work, audiences, partners and the community to blossom.
The organisers have promised an exciting, fresh and eclectic programme of non-stop entertainment and celebrations which include a soccer tournament.
Journalists will have the opportunity to trade their pens for football boots in this year’s tournament as are expected invited to participate in the soccer extravaganza.
The festival’s press liaison officer Nkululeko Nkala said the festival afforded young people, families and the community the opportunity to enjoy and express themselves fully.
He added that the football tournament has been growing in popularity.
“Following the previous years of playing football at Ibumba, the organisers and football enthusiasts are championing an innovative programme which will see football and arts come together to engage young people, families and the community at large to finish the festival in a social manner,” he said.
The football tournament’s final will be held on December 22, the last day of the festival.
Matches were first played in 2008 when four teams of artistes played for a floating shield, R500 and a goat.
The tournament was won by Mawezi Baccosi Select from Njube and neighbouring townships when they beat team Siyaya 2-0.
In 2009, the tournament was won by Team Makokoba.
This year’s edition will see an increase in the number of teams participating and include be Team Siyaya, Team Journalists & Entertainment, Makokoba, Nguboyenja, Barbourfields, Mzilikazi, Njube and Nkulumane Nketa United.
