In a rather low scoring third unofficial cricket Test between Zimbabwe A and New Zealand A at the Country Club on Friday, the hosts were leading by 167 runs at close of play after 43,5 overs after being bowled out for 189 in their second innings.
New Zealand A, who lead the series 1-0 and won the toss and chose to field, can wrap up the game on Saturday unless the Zimbabwe attack hold their own.
Zimbabwe had been dismissed for 186 after 55 overs on the first day on Thursday as NZ fast bowlers Chris Martin and Graeme Aldridge shared nine wickets in their first innings.
At stumps on the same day, the tourists were 79-3 after 30 overs and added 129 yesterday as they closed their first innings on 208 all out from 68,3 overs.
Gareth Hopkins hit 69 off 96 balls while Tinashe Panyangara and Michael Chinouya returned impressive figures of 3/52 and 3/44 respectively.
On Friday, Zimbabwe A went into the game hoping for better fortunes as Tino Mawoyo cruised to a half century from 64 balls, putting away nine boundaries.
He added 12 more to bow out on 62 off 91 balls after being given out leg before wicket off a Jeetan Patel delivery.
Patel finished with figures of 2/38, while Brent Arnel closed on 3/47, taking the wickets of Malcom Waller (19), Tinashe Panyangara (zero) and Tinashe Garwe who was on 11.
Graeme Aldridge finished on 2/49.
A notable contribution to Zimbabwe’s total was Timycen Maruma’s 43 not out.
However, this was not enough to get Zimbabwe above 200, but just enough to hand over the series to the tourists.
