The inaugural Miss Universities Zimbabwe, which is meant to celebrate the total beauty with brains package, has been scheduled for this weekend in Harare.
The show, which is on this Saturday at Ochi City in Borrowdale, will see more than 20 beauties from the country’s institutions of higher learning strut their stuff on the ramp.
The pageant’s choreographer Katherine Sukuta said the show would run under the theme “Empowerment of the Girl Child through Celebration of Beauty and Brains”.
“Through my modelling experience, I’ve realised that young models are prone to abuse and they can be easily taken for a ride and this adds to the challenges that the girl child faces. Thus my heart lies with the empowerment of the girl child,” said Sukuta.
She said very few women in Zimbabwe occupied leadership positions such as Minister of Finance or Governor of the Reserve Bank.
Sukuta said she intended to correct this anomally through a pageant specifically for young women in universities and colleges.
“I’m a woman who appreciates that as a matter of merit, women are more than capable and Zimbabwe in particular has a sizeable pool of women who are intellectually qualified to be at the decision-making high table,” she said.
Sukuta said the winning queen would walk away with a cash prize of $750, cosmetic hampers and food hampers. The first princes would receive $500 and the second princess would get $350.
She said there will also be a Miss Personality who will land $250 in prize money.
The models have been in camp since Saturday, and have also visited tourist attractions while networking with sponsors as well as making consideration of business proposals.
“The models have chosen a charity organisation of their choice for which the winners will be ambassadors in a more practical way.
The winner will also be the Zimbabwean pioneer to proceed to the Miss University Africa,” said Sukuta.
Popular television personality Prominence Makaza, who is coordinating the event, said the likes of Tongai “Dhewa” Moyo and King Shady are billed to perform at the pageant.
