A man and his daughter have been jailed for forcing a 15-year-old girl who is their daughter and sister respectively to marry a local man and later assaulting her for her refusal to do so.
Sinana Farmer Ndlovu who is the father of the girl and Kudzai Mpofu, the girl’s sister, pleaded guilty to contravening Section 94 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform ) Act (pledging female person) when they appeared before Binga resident magistrate Stephen Ndlovu.
They were convicted and sentenced to 12 months which were wholly suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour.
Coster Mathe (35) who had been “given” the child as a wife appeared separately before the same magistrate facing the same charges.
The magistrate also sentenced him to 12 months which were wholly suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour.
Prosecutor Bruce Maphosa told the court that on May 7 this year, Ndlovu, Mpofu and Mathe met at Ndlovu’s homestead where they entered into an agreement to the effect that the complainant (name supplied) aged 15 should marry Mathe.
The girl refused and Ndlovu beat her up. The girl later ran away from home and sought refuge at her cousin’s home. The matter was reported to the police at Lusulu in Binga the following day, leading to the arrest of Ndlovu and Mpofu.
Mathe could not be located at the time of the two accomplices’ arrest.
He was later arrested in July at Lusulu, leading to his appearance in court separately.
