In an incident that has left villagers shocked, a man from the Lusulu area in Binga struck his father on the forehead with an axe, suspecting him of using magical sexual powers to sleep with his wife.
The victim sustained serious injuries. Titus Mupande (38) pleaded guilty to the charges when he appeared before Binga magistrate Stephen Ndlovu on Thursday last week.
The magistrate convicted and sentenced Mupande to 24 months in jail with hard labour.
But four months of the sentence were suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour.
The prosecutor, Bruce Maphosa, told the court that on September 6 this year, Mupande returned home drunk and started accusing his father Kambani Popayi Sibanda (64) of using a sex charm to sleep with his wife at night and causing an illness.
The court heard that Mupande then grabbed an axe, and struck his father once on the forehead. The father sustained a severe wound on the forehead.
Sibanda was taken to Binga District Hospital for treatment.
A report was made to the police in Binga leading to Mupande’s arrest.
The doctor’s report revealed that Sibanda had five stitches sewn to the wound but did not sustain any damage to the skull or to the bone, though the wound was deep.
Furthermore, Sibanda might have traumatic epilepsy in future as a result of the wound.
On being asked why he attacked his father, Mupande blamed his behaviour on drunkenness.
“My lord I apologise I was drunk I will not repeat that again,” said Mupande.
Passing sentence, magistrate Ndlovu said: “You were not forced to drink you did it yourself at your own will and thus you cannot cheat the law by so saying hence a deterrent sentence suits you.”
