Confessed armed robber gets 24 years

A Harare man was last week slapped with a 24-year-jail term after he pleaded guilty to two counts of armed robbery before regional magistrate William Bhila.

Blessing Kanyenze Muvembi admitted to robbing Ronald Peter Brenjac of Strathaven and George Hambira of Milton Park on October 27 last year and stealing property valued at approximately $6 700.

Bhila suspended nine years on condition Muvembi does not commit a similar offence within the next five years.

Muvembi teamed up with accomplices whose names were not mentioned in court but were said to be currently serving prison terms and hatched a plan to embark on a robbery spree.

The state proved that Muvembi, armed with a pistol and a bolt cutter, scaled a precast wall at Brenjac’s residence and forced open a window to gain entry.

He cut the burglar bars, entered the house with a firearm and went to Brenjac’s bedroom where he woke him up, pointed the firearm at him and threatened to shoot him.

Muvembi and his accomplices tied Brenjac’s hands behind his back and one of the robbers struck the victim on his right leg with a bolt cutter.

The gang stole a safe with $3 500, a Star pistol, a cellphone, a gold wristwatch, a camera and a Zimbabwean passport before disappearing into the darkness.

On the same day, Muvembi and his gang went to Milton Park where they robbed Hambira of his cellphone, perfume, driver’s licence and $100.

On December 12 last year police received information and arrested Muvembi’s accomplices who implicated him during investigations but he had been on the run until his arrest a fortnight ago in Harare.
