-

The Zimbabwe Sevens Rugby national team, better known as the Cheetahs and the developmental side — the Goshawks, go into battle at the Platinum Sevens in Rustenburg, South Africa this weekend.

Eight international teams including the hosts South Africa and 16 club and provincial sides, will take part at the tournament which will also have a separate schools tournament.

This is the second tournament the two teams from Zimbabwe will take part in as many weeks after participating at the Nashua Middleburg Sevens in Mpumalanga last weekend.

According to reports from South Africa, the Cheetahs were placed in the same pool with Zambia, Northern Region and Namibia with only a top finish guaranteeing them a place in the semifinals.

The draw for the Goshawks was not immediately available Friday.

Their southern neighbors and hosts, the Springboks sevens will battle out with Golden Lions, Botswana and Atlantic invitational team for their matches tomorrow.

The Springboks Sevens’ official website, reported yesterday that the Platinum Sevens will get underway this afternoon at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium while the finals will take place on Sunday afternoon.

“Apart from South Africa, the other international teams competing include Namibia, Botswana, Zambia and Zimbabwe,” read the statement on the website.

The South Africa squad will use the tournament to wrap up their preparations for the Commonwealth Games in India.

The Cheetahs on the other hand will use the tournament as preparations for the International Rugby Board (IRB) World Series’ legs in Dubai and George South Africa later this year.
