Former Dynamos and Zimbabwe Warriors coach Sunday Chidzambwa has resigned as coach of South African Premiership soccer side Free State Stars.
He has since been replaced by former Stars coach Steve Komphela who was appointed as head coach with immediate effect.
Free State Stars and Chidzambwa reached a mutual agreement yesterday morning after the former Dynamos coach had announced his resignation at a management meeting.
“Ea Lla Koto’s” general manager, Rantsi Mokoena, confirmed on the club website that indeed they had parted ways with Chidzambwa.
“Sunday came to us and he pleaded with us to release him from his duties as he is going back to his native country for family issues,” explained Mokoena.
Mokoena stated that Chidzambwa was a true gentleman and a real father figure to the players and he wished him the very best of luck in his future endeavours.
“It’s sad that we have to part ways with coach Sunday so early in the season as he was on the right track as far as his work is concerned. We will miss him. We hope that this will be just the end of a formal relationship and that we still remain friends,” said Mokoena.
Chidzambwa also said on the club website that it was a great pleasure to have worked for a club like Free State Stars who have been good to him since his arrival in May.
“ I have enjoyed my stay at the club and I wish the club the very best of luck for the remainder of the current 2010/11 season”, said Chidzambwa.
Chidzambwa explained to freestatestars.co.za that he would be taking a break from football for a while.
His resignation has not really come as a surprise since he was rumoured to be unsure about the starting line-up and often relied on his assistant Themba Sithole to help him in drawing up the starting list regarding the first XI.
