Esigodini man in court for rape

ESIGODINI —A man from Khomani resettlement area in Esigodini allegedly waylaid and raped a 17-year-old girl who had disembarked from a bus along the highway, a local magistrate heard last Wednesday.
The girl, who was coming from Bulawayo, disembarked from the bus at San Hill bus stop from which Innocent Gumbo (24) allegedly followed her to a secluded place, where he grabbed and raped her.
Gumbo pleaded not guilty to the charge but magistrate Lungile Ncube remanded him in custody to September 29 when he is expected to appear before the Regional Court in Gwanda.
Prosecutor Nhlanhla Ndlovu told the court that on September 12 at around 7pm, the girl who resides at San Hill Pump Station in Esigodini was coming from Bulawayo when, after disembarking from the bus at San Hill bus stop, she met Gumbo in the company of another man identified as Gilbert Dube.
The state alleges that when the girl proceeded to her home, Gumbo followed her, leaving behind Dube. The court heard that on reaching a secluded place, Gumbo threatened the girl with assault and pulled her skirt down twice but the girl resisted his actions.
Gumbo then forcefully pulled the girl’s undergarments, tripped her and raped her once before escaping from the scene. Soon after the rape, the girl reported the matter to a security guard manning the San Hill Pump Station main entrance who then assisted her in making a report to the police, leading to Gumbo’s arrest. The girl was referred to Esigodini Hospital for examination and the medical doctor confirmed that she was raped.
