A Zapu activist was on Monday allegedly struck in the face with an iron bar by alleged Zanu PF activists after an altercation over an intended seizure of a white-owned company where he is employed.
Edmore Munenekwa was attacked for siding with his white boss, Gary Fury, who is allegedly resisting the seizure of his company Fisher Motors by a Zanu PF-aligned businessman.
His workmate, Rametsi Manzini, was also bludgeoned with an iron bar.
Zapu information director Methuseli Moyo claimed 15 Zanu PF supporters descended on the company premises with the intention of beating up Fury.
“Our member Edmore Munenekwa was struck in the face with an iron bar when he told Zanu PF militia members to stop harassing his employers who are white Zimbabweans,” he said. “The Zanu PF members went to Fisher Motors premises in Bulawayo in a marked Zanu PF Youth Affairs vehicle. They declared that they wanted to beat up Gary Fury, the director of the company, whom they accused of refusing to hand over the company to a Zanu PF-aligned businessman.”
The gang, some of who are known to Munenekwa, allegedly declared that they would kill all Zapu members in Bulawayo and that they would not be arrested because “Zanu PF rules”.
Zapu leader Dumiso Dabengwa has since made an appeal to Home Affairs co-ministers to restore sanity and take action on partisan police officers for not properly carrying out their duties.
“We also call on the co-ministers of Home Affairs to act swiftly and deal with wayward police officers in Bulawayo who act and behave as if they are employed by Zanu PF or part of its structures,” said Moyo.
He said the party had noted with concern “Zanu PF’s provocative behaviour and the unconvincing attendance to the matter by the police, and the apparent connection between the Zanu PF thugs and some members of CID Law and Order (Section)”.
“We will, in the meantime, give the police the benefit of the doubt (and expect them) to arrest and charge all the suspects, failure of which Zapu will mobilise its own defence mechanism. It is sad that some Zanu PF members are still possessed by the Gukurahundi demon, which their own president ‘regrets’.
“Zapu will this time around not allow any political opponent to injure and kill our members like has happened before,” he said.
