Zimbabwe’s most promising recording label Heshi Mfeshi has sold 400 copies of Leonard Mapfumo’s latest album The Journey in less than a month, their first ever distribution.
The recording label was established in 2007 by Joe Machingura who is also the Urban Groovers public relations officer but began operating at full-throttle early this year.
“When I thought of starting the label it was aimed at searching for new talent and managing artist, but now we also market and distribute the artistes’ music,” said Machingura.
He said their first attempt at marketing and distribution was with Mapfumo’s latest album whose response was overwhelming.
Since January many artistes including Sanii Makhalima, Cindy Munyavi, Trevor Dongo, DJ Mbale and Project Fame have signed up under Heshi Mfeshi.
“I want to make sure artistes in Zimbabwe are treated professionally as I will be managing their contracts, shows and any other activity to do with their music,” he said.
He said initially the recording label used to only focus on managing the artistes while their marketing and distribution was done by Metro Studios and sales were always low thus they had decided to take up the task.
Some of the artistes now on Heshi Mfeshi’s books include ExQ, Ngoni Kambarami and Stunner.
Metro Studios, however, did not sell much of their music, forcing them to start their own recording label.
Machingura said he grew up with a passion for music.
