Buffalo Souljah, a South African-based Zimbabwean dancehall musician, has been nominated for the 2010 Channel O Music Video Awards (MVAs), set to take place on November 4 at the Sandton Convention Centre in South Africa.
In 2008 the artiste, whose real name is Thabani Ndlovu, walked away with two awards for Best Newcomer and Best Ragga Dancehall Video for his hit track Bubble Your Bumz.
He went on to scoop two more awards at the glamorous event in 2009, landing the Best Ragga Dancehall Video and Best Duo or Group for the track, My Type of Girl which featured artistes Taygrin and Gal Level from Malawi and Namibia.
This year, Souljah’s track, Too Many of Me has been nominated for the Most Gifted Ragga Dancehall Video and he is competing with General Pype (Nigeria), Samini (Ghana), Wyre (Kenya) and Kwela Tebza (South Africa).
The Zimboy has been nominated twice for his track of the moment, Izandhla Phezulu and will compete for the Most Gifted South Video category against South African hip-hop artiste, Proverb, Mozambique’s Dama Do Bling, Mzansi’s popular group Big Nuz and Pro from South Africa.
MultiChoice Zimbabwe public relations manager Elizabeth Dziva told NewsDay yesterday that the Channel O Music Video Awards, first held in 2003, were also known as Spirit of Africa Music Video Awards and are Pan-African music awards organised by South Africa-based Channel O television channel.
She added that Channel O and MultiChoice had done their part and that it was now up to the artistes and fans to mobilise in order to secure votes for the music videos of their choice.
“It is the fans who decide who walks away with the award and we are proud that Zimbabwe’s Buffalo Souljah keeps representing the country at the awards though we would also like to encourage other Zimbabwean artistes to submit their musical videos to Channel O so that they may also be recognised next year,” said Dziva.
In total, the 2010 Channel O Music Video Awards are spread across 14 categories – with five nominees in each category, except Most Gifted Video of the Year which features six nominees.
Meanwhile, voters have been urged to start voting for their favourite artists via SMS. This can be done by sending a message with the artistes code to the South African number (+27 83 920 8406) or via the web (www.mva.channelo.tv).
