Young Tinotenda Mutombodzi took five wickets for 93 runs for Mashonaland Eagles as they recovered from a slow start to restrict Southern Rocks to 301-8 at the close of day one at Masvingo Sports Club yesterday in the Logan Cup.
The player was named Junior Cricketer of the Year last Friday. Defending champions Eagles won the toss and elected to field.
The decision seemed to backfire as Rocks cruised to a first wicket partnership of 125 between Stuart Marillier and Chamu Chibhabha.
Chibhabha was dismissed for 85 while Marillier scored 55. After losing five wickets for 75 runs it seemed like they were in trouble at 210-5 but a middle order fight-back gave their total some respectability.
Steve Tikolo and Stuart Matsikenyeri fought back with 20 and 24 runs respectively while the latter teamed up with Tendai Chisoro for a seventh wicket partnership of 47 runs which was the second highest in their innings.
Garwe finished with figures of 2-49 in 16 overs.
