Hundreds of illegal vendors in Harare are set to lose their markets stalls after Harare City Council indicated they were would demolish illegal structures in and around the city.
Council said the illegal structures were bringing the city’s standards down amid reports that mushrooming market stalls were becoming an eyesore.
The decision by council comes at a time when three council workers are facing disciplinary action for allocating council land without municipal authority.
“We have to stop these people and remove illegal markets mushrooming everywhere,” said Councillor Wilton Janjazi.
Janjazi said council will act fast on illegal structures or else the city would continue to lose its glamour.
Illegal markets set to be demolished include the one next to Harare Central Police Station in the city centre and the one near Mbudzi roundabout, among others.
