Senegalese-born R&B superstar Akon does not drink alcohol and is said to pray five times a day, like every Muslim. He also reportedly proclaims that he does not smoke.
His publicist, Jaime Cassavechia, reacting to a NewsDay story on Saturday about Akon preference of expensive larger Hennessey, said the singer did not consume alcohol.
But, Zimswag, organisers of the show, told NewsDay Sunday that Akon had requested that Hennessey be made available for his entourage among other demands during their visit.
Hennessy is top-end liquor favourite of American celebrities.
“We brought the Hennessey and Courvoisier as they requested,” coordinator of Zimswag Clive Mutyasiri said from the Harare International Airport Sunday, where he was seeing off Sean Paul and Akon and their crews.
Media reports on Friday indicated that Akon had missed a flight for a trip organised by Zimbabwe Tourism Authority to the Victoria Falls.
However, according to the star’s publicist, the trip to the Falls was never discussed with him, although ZTA had hastily arranged for Akon and his crew to visit the country’s top tourist area.
ZTA had also arranged for journalists to accompany Akon on the Friday morning flight.
Cassavechia, who is also vice-president of Susan Blond Incorporated, a leading entertainment publicist in New York, said: “Neither Akon nor his management team agreed to visit Victoria Falls on a commercial flight that morning.”
Meanwhile, Akon has said there have been a lot of misconceptions about Africa in many parts of the world, adding that he struggled to see the bad things that had been said about Zimbabwe in the Western world.
