Biti in Botswana for $70m credit line

Finance minister Tendai Biti Wednesday flew to Botswana to meet his counterparts in the country over a $70 million line of credit pledged by the country under a Sadc initiative.

This is the most promising among the numerous such facilities pledged by regional “friends” in support of Zimbabwe’s economic reconstruction.

South Africa has pledged about $72,09 million, Mozambique R585 million and Angola R366 million.

However, apart from R300 million budgetary support from South Africa disbursed in December last year, none of these commitments have materialised, according to a report tabled at the Sadc annual summit in Windhoek last month.
