Zim girl instant hit on X-Factor reality show

Scotland-based Gamuchirai Nhengu (18) has become an instant TV sensation after 12 million people watched her waltz through an audition for the hit ITV talent search show, X-Factor, at the weekend.
Leading bookmaker William Hill has made her a 10/1 favourite to go all the way and win this year’s contest.
The Zimbabwean gave a unique rendition of Katrina and the Waves’ 1983 hit, Walking on Sunshine, and had the Glasgow audience literally eating out of her hand.
Ahead of her performance, Gamuchirai tearfully told judges: “This means everything. I want to give something back to my mum. She has worked so hard.”
Her mother, Nokuthula (38), who left Zimbabwe in 2005 with Gamu and her two brothers Milton and Marty, broke into tears backstage as judges Simon Cowell, Geri Halliwell, Cheryl Cole and Louis Walsh waxed lyrical about her performance.
Gamu says life in Scotland, which is now like a second home, “took a lot of getting used to”.
She attended the Glasgow audition for X-Factor in June.
The songstress, who wore a red rose in her hair, did not prepare the millions of TV viewers for her storming performance, saying in an advance recording: “When I get on that stage, I want everybody to leave Glasgow and think, ‘the girl with the flower in her hair, she was great.’ That’s all I want.”
And she went on to do just that, but she said she did not watch her audition when it first aired on Saturday night.
She spent Saturday night with her eyes and ears covered and made her family watch her screen time instead.
“I was at home and I was so, so nervous. I spent the whole day trying to block it out, but trying to remember as well. When it was time to start watching, I just covered my eyes and said ‘I hope I’m not on first’. When I came on I didn’t watch it. I closed my eyes and closed my ears and didn’t want to see it.
“Afterwards I asked everybody ‘How was it? Tell me the bad bits, tell me the good bits.’ I mentally prepared myself and then I watched it,” she said.
Gamu will join dozens of other finalists in October for the live shows which will follow the screening of the auditions. –
