Gamuchirai Nhengu had to wait two years before she could have a dance with reality TV show X-Factor as her mother had ordered her to prioritise her studies.
But after watching her 18-year-old daughter beautifully sing her way through the auditions with a rendition of Walking on Sunshine, the mother – Nokuthula – made a deal with Gamu to delay going to university “and see how far she can do”.
“She’s wanted to do the X-Factor two years ago and I insisted that she finish off high school,” Nokuthula said during an appearance on ITV’s This Morning on Monday.
The Scotland-based teen said she could only bring herself to watch it after her friends had given it their approval.
Gamu left Zimbabwe five years ago with her single mum and two teenage brothers. Since the show, bookies have given her odds of 14/1 to win the contest and her audition clip has been watched 220 000 times on YouTube.
But Gamu says she’s not worried about the pressure that’s already on her: “Hopefully I’ll live up to it! Hey, I’m up to the challenge, it’s awesome.”
She however admitted the competition was stiff. – www.newzimbabwe.com/Staff Writer
