ZNA soldier steals vehicle

A soldier with the Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA), Stanley Wayne Chimunda, based at One Mechanised Battalion, Harare, allegedly stole a motor vehicle and swapped it for another to avoid detection.
Chimunda (24) allegedly went to Guzha shopping centre — popularly known as Chikwanha — in Chitungwiza on June 21 this year where he loitered around before approaching David Mukucha, who was selling his Toyota Camry.
Chimunda purportedly showed interest in purchasing the vehicle at $3 500.
He allegedly told Mukucha he would only buy the vehicle once he had test-driven it to assess its performance. Chimunda was allowed to test-drive the vehicle and Mukucha assigned his younger brother to escort the soldier. Chimunda allegedly drove the vehicle to Marlborough where upon arrival at a service station he ordered Mukucha’s brother to disembark and drove away. The state further alleges that Chimunda sold the vehicle to an as yet unidentified person through a swap deal and was given a Mazda 323. Mukucha’s brother returned home and reported the incident to his brother who in turn made a police report.
Following a tip off that Chimunda was allegedly sleeping in a motor vehicle in Zengeza, police hunted him down, leading to his arrest.
Chimunda appeared before provincial magistrate Munamato Mutevedzi, who remanded him in custody and advised him to apply for bail at the High Court.
He was not asked to plead.
