Monoz salvage point

Former champions Monomotapa continued their fine run when they came from behind to hold inconsistent defending champions Gunners 1-1 in a Premier
Soccer league match played at Gwanzura Thursday.

Norman Maroto opened the scoring for the host side with a clinical finish in the fifth minute before Monomotapa restored parity seven minutes from full
time through Charles Chiutsa.

Thursday’s result meant that Gunners have now gone for four matches without a win as they are struggling to recover from the loss of Ramson Zhuwawo and
Carrington Nyadombo to South African side AmaZulu.

Willard Katsande was also not in the side as he is on trials in South Africa.

Monomotapa on the other hand have enjoyed a purple patch under the guidance of Taurayi Mangwiro since the surprise resignation of Maxwell Takaendesa Jongwe.

Mangwiro said: “The guys have been showing a lot of commitment on the field of play and although we conceded an early goal they kept fighting until the
final whistle.”

In fact, Gunners had goalkeeper Tafadzwa Dube to thank after he made some crucial point blank saves on regular intervals as the 2008 league champions battled for an equaliser.

Gunners were in control of the initial exchanges and after five minutes Nathan Ziwini surged through the Monoz defence and fed an onrushing Maroto, who scored past an exposed Tapiwa Mafunga.

Tawanda Nyamandwe and Kudakwashe Musharu could have equalised but Dube was in good form as he kept the defending champions in the lead up to halftime.

Mangwiro’s trump card was when he brought in Makai Kawashu for Nyamandwe and the move paid off as the move completely changed the complexion of the game
in the visitors’ favor.

In the 72nd minute Daniel Vheremu got injured as he made a desperate clearance for a ball that had already gone into the touchline which caused further injury to his hamstring which has kept him in the dispensary rather than on the field of play.

As he was receiving treatment on the sidelines Monomotapa took advantage.

Veteran midfielder Chiutsa received a cross from Musharu wide outside the box and turned sharply before releasing a stinger that beat Dube all systems
