The courts in Gwanda are being forced to remand out of custody all accused persons, even when there is clear need to detain them.
Gwanda Prison cells are being renovated and cannot take inmates.
A senior prosecutor, Sikholiwe Ncube, has confirmed the developments at the courts, saying all the prisoners who were at Gwanda Prison together with the prison officers had been transferred to Khami Prison in Bulawayo to make way for the renovations at Gwanda Prison.
“For the next three months, we will not be having much work to do as we have no prison cells since Gwanda Prison is undergoing renovation,” Ncube said.
“This means if we sit for the cases here, we are forced to remand all cases out of custody and it would be meaningless for some of the cases that need to be remanded in custody. The renovations are expected to take three months.”
She said all the cases that had been dealt with after the relocation of other prisoners from Gwanda to Khami Prison were remanded out of custody.
