National Association of Non-Governmental Organisations (Nango) board chairperson Dadirai Chikwengo has defended member groupings under her umbrella body that were using external radio stations to broadcast messages into the country.
Addressing journalists at a press club function in Gweru recently, Chikwengo said many NGOs under her umbrella organisation preferred using external radio stations to make themselves heard as opposed to the local broadcaster.
“I do not even call them pirate radio stations but alternative radio stations. We have no apologies for speaking to them because they are reporting on Zimbabwe. The truth is I respect them so much.”
Her sentiments came against the background of an outcry by the public over the sole broadcaster’s monopoly and of late the flighting of partisan jingles that exalt President Robert Mugabe and his Zanu PF party.
