Civic society bodies have called on Southern African Development Community (Sadc) leaders to come up with a concrete plan to end state-sponsored violence in Zimbabwe ahead of elections scheduled for 2011.
Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition, an umbrella body of civic society groups in the country, said Sadc leaders as guarantors to the Global Political Agreement (Gpa) that gave birth to the inclusive government should see to it that all outstanding issues were dealt with.
African leaders will converge in Windhoek, Namibia next Sunday for a Sadc Summit.
In a statement civic groups said Sadc and African Union leaders should ensure that Zimbabwe fully complied with regional principles and guidelines governing democratic elections – including impartiality of electoral institutions.
The civic society said regional leaders should see to it that the right of Zimbabweans in the diaspora to vote was upheld, adding that necessary administrative mechanisms to facilitate that vote should be put in place.
