Zimbabwean players lose in ITF junior tourney

Zimbabwean tennis players at the International Tennis Federation (ITF) South Central African Junior circuit tournament in Windhoek, Namibia, found the going tough with one player only making the quarter-finals.
Zimbabwe’s best performer at the tournament was 16-year- old Valeria Bhunu who managed to reach the quarter-finals in the girls’ singles category.
She eventually lost in straight sets 6-3, 6-1 to South Africa’s Natasha Fouroclas.
Tendai Tapfuma and Pauline Chawafambira also managed to reach the third round of the boys’ and girls’ singles matches respectively. Tapfuma lost 7-6, 6-1 to Dudley Smith of South Africa while Chawafambira lost to Tracy Plant 6-4, 7-5 to bow out of the regional tournament.
The other young tennis players at the event, Innocent Mhere, Takudzwa Sachikonye, Shingirai Kaisa, Ronzai Saurombe, Adriel and Takudzwa Muswere were knocked out in the first round.
Saurombe lost to Great Britain’s Jordan Angus in the first round 6-3, 7-6.
The second leg of the tournament begins today and ends on Saturday.
Tennis Zimbabwe vice president, Regis Bhunu said even though results were not forthcoming in terms of individual performances, Zimbabwean players would benefit more as they had younger players than most of the teams at the competition. Zimbabwe is set to host the Under-12 and 14 ITF circuit matches next month.
