Youth Games in limbo

-

The national Youth Games have been dealt a major blow amid revelations that participants may not use the National Sports Stadium.
Sources yesterday said the Ministry of Public Works, which is now responsible for bookings at the giant complex, has lined up an annual gathering for an unnamed church.
The National Sports Stadium is the only structure in Harare with an internationally recognised athletics turf. The other venues, Rufaro and Gwanzura, can only host soccer matches and not track and field events.
This year’s Youth Games are being hosted by Harare province and will run from August 15 to 22.
A top official at the Sports and Recreation Commission, which used to run the stadium, yesterday said he was not amused by the actions of the Ministry of Public Works.
“The ministry (Public Works) is now running the stadium since the renovations were completed. We thought they were going to give it back to the Ministry of Education, Sports and Culture who in turn would give back the complex to us,” said the official.
