Evicted family lives in the open

A Harare family has been living at the roadside along Airport Road in Hatfield after they were evicted from a house in the suburb for failure to pay rentals for over five months.
Marian Rukondo, a 41-year- old, heavily pregnant woman and her husband, were on July 21 evicted from the house they were renting.
Rukondo, whose property was strewn all over, said that trouble began when her husband’s carpentry business became defunct. “I don’t blame the landlord for evicting us. We are broke,” said Rukondo. “I can’t even continue with my usual business of buying and selling since I’m expecting my sixth child any time from now,” she said. Rukondo said that they were struggling to pay school fees, which are in arrears, for their children.
She said her oldest son left home four years ago for South Africa and has not communicated with the family since then.
“My children have been greatly affected by this situation, especially the ones in Grade 7 and Form 3. I’m afraid that other children might ridicule them if they find out (they were living in the open), which may cause them to fail,” she said. When NewsDay visited the the family she was dishing out a meal to one of her children, Vimbai, and her husband’s sister who had paid them a visit. She said her husband had been looking for a job for a very long time without success.
“My husband is originally from Rusape and I am from Beatrice but there is nothing left at his rural home and besides we do not even have a single penny to take us there,” she said.
