Highlanders midfielder Eric Mudzingwa scored in the first half of extra-time to propel the Bulawayo giants into the semi-finals of the BancABC Sup8r Cup after they beat Monomotapa in a luke-warm match played at Barbourfields Stadium.
The match was played before a disappointing crowd.
Credit for the goal, scored in the seventh minute of the first half of extra-time should go to striker Rahman Kutsanzira who let off a screamer that hit the cross-bar from the right flank.
The resultant rebound fell onto the path of hard-working Mudzingwa, who did not make a mistake firing an equally thunderous shot which left Monomotapa goalkeeper Tapuwa Mafunga a bemused spectator.
Monomotapa have themselves to blame for the defeat as they played better than their counter-parts, dominating the midfield but made few meaningful attacks at goal. New Bosso acquisition Fancis Kanda could have scored for the hosts two minutes into the match but his beautiful curler from inside the box was saved by Mafunga with the Highlanders fans already celebrating. In the 21st minute, the wasteful Kanda was at it again after he connected a pass that missed the right upright post by a few inches.
Kutsanzira could have put Bosso in the lead towards the end of the first half after being set up by Mudzingwa inside the box. But his effort was blocked by defender Luckymore Simango and he fluffed the rebound, shooting the ball way-off target. Man-of-the- match former Sundowns midfielder Tendai Ngulube, captain Charles Chiutsa and Tawanda Nyamandwe kept the Highlanders’ midfield on their toes but were not purposeful in attack.Ngulube walked away with a shield and $200 for being named the man-of-the-match.
