Athlete Gimo disappoints in Kenya

-

Zimbabwe’s only female athlete at the 17th Senior African Athletics Championships in Nairobi, Kenya hurdler Grace Gimo finished a disappointing seventh in the semi-finals of the 400 metre hurdles on Saturday.
Gimo, competing in a difficult race due to the physical superiority of her competitors, suffered a setback when she fell on the second bend of the track. She never recovered but courageously persisted to complete the race.
The championships, which took place at the Nyayo Stadium finished yesterday but attracted some of Africa’s best athletes.
Gimo was the only Zimbabwean athlete left in contention after sprinters David Tinago and Dylan Rensburg fell by the way- side in the heats of their respective disciplines last week.
In the men’s 100 metres first round, Rensburg came last in 11,55 seconds in a race that was won by Obinna Metu of Nigeria in 10,37 seconds. Rensburg, who has a personal best of 10,44 seconds blamed the performance on a poor start.
