Chimoto showcasing upcoming artists

The Alliance Française has become a regular venue for Chimoto, a recently born urban cultural organisation that supports upcoming performing artists.
Chimoto hosts sessions every last Friday of the month where artistes display their talents in performing arts including poetry, music and dance.
“Our core value is creative activism where we aim to have poetry, hip hop and other forms of performing arts sending out positive messages to the people,” said the events coordinator Cynthia Marangwanda.
She said that since the organisation was formed in November 2009 their audience has been expanding at every event although in May and June they deliberately cancelled the shows because of the popular crowd-pulling Harare International Festival of the Arts (Hifa) and the World Cup.
The group, founded by 24 year-old poet and film-making student Marangwanda and Innocent Fungurani a 22 year-old poet and visual artist, is set to hold workshops and produce a journal in support of uplifting performing arts in Zimbabwe.
“We are searching for talent in performing arts as long as their vibes are constructive in people’s lives,” she said.
Marangwanda said Chimoto is a community event meaning ‘bonfire’ which signifies the way a community gathers around The ‘Chi’ in Chimoto represents the Chimurenga revolution.
“We have had various upcoming artists like Batsirai Chigama the poet, Thanda a reggae artist and the very talented female rapper and poet Theresa Mungazi also known as Misfit,” she said.
She said other popular artists have been attending Chimoto sessions including Comrade Fatso and his Magamba Band and also established poets like Sharppa and Aura Kawanzaruwa. On Friday they had a session which included performing artists from Bulawayo, Black Phari and Aerosol amongst other local artists like Nebila the Muslim poet and GOD (Godobori).
“Because our audience is growing bigger by the days we are planning to expand our venues very soon,” she said.
