Goromonzi High plays host to sports tourney

Goromonzi High School will this weekend play host to the second edition of the Faithwear and Eli-Mathias invitational sports tournament which will feature schools from Harare and Mashonaland East.
Ten schools will battle it out in basketball, netball, volleyball, handball and chess for the $10 000 worth of sponsorship and Faithwear kits that will be on offer.
Hosts Goromonzi High School will be joined by Mazowe Boys High, Visitation, Churchill Boys High, Prince Edward, Queen Elizabeth, Peterhouse, Gateway, Girls High and Murehwa High.
Event coordinator Tendai Zhakata said the main idea behind the tournament was to give young people the platform to develop their sporting skills.
“The main purpose of the tournament is to empower the young people through sport as it is now a major source of employment and also play a part in the development of local sport.
“The participating schools showed a lot of enthusiasm after the success of last year’s tournament which is why we are holding it again this year.
“Scouts and coaches in the various sporting disciplines on offer are welcome to come and scout for young talented athletes.
“This year’s competition is unique in that it will take place when the provinces are finalising their teams for the Youth Games and it will be good exposure for the youngsters,” said Zhakata.
The young athletes will also have an opportunity to mix and mingle with football local legend Moses Chunga who will be the guest of honour at the two-day event.
Churchill are the defending champions in boy’s football while Goromonzi, Mazowe and Visitation will defend their netball, volleyball and handball titles respectively.
At a time when Zimbabwean sport has been struggling to secure sponsorship, this gesture by Faithwear and Eli-Mathias will go a long way in enhancing the growth of sport at grass-roots level.
