Governor appeals for help

As the National Youth Games draw closer, the Governor and Resident Minister of Harare Metropolitan, David Karimanzira has appealed for corporate support.
Speaking at a press briefing on the state of preparedness to host the games yesterday morning, Karimanzira appealed for the corporate world to come to the support of the games for them to be a success.
The local organising oommittee (LOC) which is headed by the Philemon Machana last month announced a preliminary budget of $3 million.
“The corporate world, residents, the diplomatic community and all stakeholders should come to the support of the games so that they leave a legacy of the sporting culture that exists in the country,” he said.
He said although LOC was still in the process of gathering the pledges made at the launch, three million dollars was still needed to cater for transport, accommodation, food and competition kits.
Karimanzira also said the stakeholders had not done enough to market the games since their inception in 2003 but said Harare had a chance to break that cycle.
Machana said they would launch campaigns to make the games visible to the public.
“Very soon we will be embarking on road shows and clean-up campaigns so that people identify with the games before August 15,” said Machana.
The giant National Sports Stadium will cater for the track and field activities while volleyball and boxing will use Belvedere Teachers’ College while basketball will be at the City Sports Centre. Football, netball, tennis and handball will be played at Prince Edward.”
