Young Warriors prepare for Olympics

The Zimbabwe Under-23 football team kicks off its 2011 Al-Africa Games and 2012 Olympic Games quest later this month when they take part in an eight-nation invitational tournament in Cairo, Egypt.
Under the guidance of coach Norman Mapeza and his assistant Philani Ncube, the yet- to be-named squad starts camp in Bulawayo on Sunday for the tournament that runs from July 26 to August 4 .
After confirming the trip yesterday, Zifa board member (competitions) Benedict Moyo immediately got into the ‘begging mode’, asking the corporate sector to chip in with sponsorship for the boys.
“We are looking for sponsorship; we need the corporate world to assist us as we build a team for the All-Africa Games, the Olympic qualifiers and the 2014 World Cup. We want to qualify for these competitions and the Under-23 is the base for the future national team. But without the support of the corporate world we might have problems,” Moyo said.
The Zifa Board has withdrawn all junior teams from Confederation of African Football matches but the presence the Under-23 team in the All-Africa and Olympic Games will gauge the country’s progress.
Mapeza will call up most of the players from the Premier League as the absence of a vibrant national junior league, leaves the technical team with no choice.
