Pressure mounts for Maguwu release

Incarcerated diamond rights activist, Farai Maguwu was again denied bail at the High Court yesterday as international pressure to free him mounted.
International rights group, Amnesty International yesterday said Zimbabwean authorities should release Maguwu, arrested and detained after he allegedly exposed human rights violations at the Chiadzwa diamond fields in Marange.
High Court judge, Justice Garainesu Mawadze yesterday deferred hearing on his fresh bail application to tomorrow after the Attorney General’s office requested more time.
Amnesty International yesterday joined several other international human rights organisations and Western countries calling for the immediate unconditional release of Maguwu.
Amnesty International said Maguwu was a “prisoner of conscience” who was being persecuted for documenting abuses at Zimbabwe’s richest diamond fields.
Maguwu is director of the Centre for Research and Development, an organisation that has for the past two years been investigating human rights abuses at the diamond fields.
