Econet speaks on network problems

Econet Wireless, Zimbabwe’s largest telecommunications provider, says network problems that hit Harare in the last four days were a result of faults in the Zesa grid, which also led to extended power outages.
The power cuts affected the mobile phone operator’s main switching centre for the city, in Willowvale.
“Our generators were slow to kick in,” Rangarirai Mberi, Econet’s corporate communications manager said. “We have since installed two new high capacity generators to ensure power stability at our communication centre. The configuration of additional nodes is necessary work in the course of the on going network expansion programme and we have also added an additional switching component which requires stabilisation, a process which is normal in such work particularly when done on a live network.”
Mberi added that the technical hitch also affected the short message service (SMS), resulting in increased message failures.
“We have engaged top engineers from our equipment suppliers who are working flat out to rectify the situation.”
