Controversial former television presenter Makanaka Wakatama(pictured right) has taken her husband, businessman Obvious Sambadzi to court over the maintenance of their two children Tamiriraishe, (3) and Anotidaishe (2).
Makanaka made newspaper headlines in 2006 and became the subject of intense public debate after she was impregnated by the businessman when she was below 16 – the legal age of consent in Zimbabwe.
As a result, there was a hue and cry from women’s organisations including the Girl Child Network— a foundation that advocates the protection of the rights of the girl child— that wanted Sambadzi arrested for taking advantage of the teenager.
But their outcry fell on stony ground after Makanaka’s mother sanctioned the marriage, giving the former ZTV Star Kidz presenter room to take a swipe at the media and women’s groups for meddling in her ‘happy’ union.
She was only in Form 3 at Dominican Convent High School in Harare then.
Makanaka is demanding $1 000 per child per month for the upkeep of her children.
She wants a further $800 for Tamiriraishe’s monthly crèche fees.
“My client is taking legal action against this man, but I cannot comment much on the issue as yet,” said Makanaka’s lawyer, Tendai Masawi.
Sambadzi, who owns a trendy furniture shop in the city centre and has shares in another up-market clothing company, was prominent in newspaper headlines after he was badly assaulted by unknown assailants whom he reportedly believed were sent by Makanaka when their marriage started showing signs of crumbling in August 2008.
An angry Sambadzi threw out Makanaka who is now said to be staying somewhere in Harare’s Glen Lorne suburb. The marriage, however, now seems to have irreparably broken down.
