Encore European tour for Makoomba

Makoomba band, winners of the 2008 annual Music Crossroads competitions that toured Europe last year leave for the same destination today on another tour.
Makoomba who toured European countries; Sweden, Belgium, Spain, Holland and Italy last year as part of their winning bargain, have been recalled again to Europe by Belgian promoters Zigzag World to embark on a commercial tour. The band which is now based in Harare, started off in Victoria Falls.
They leave today to perform at various European venues courtesy of Zigzag World Promotions. Mathiaz Muzaza (23), Abundance Mutori (19), Costa Ndaba Moyo (24), Trustworthy Samende (23) Miti Mugande (22) and McDonald Moyo (24) are Makoomba’s youthful members set to tour Europe.
Their first performance will be on Sunday at the Festival Couleur Cafe in Belgium before going to the ME YOU ZIK Festival in Luxembourg on July 3.
After another performance at the Festival Luxembourg on July 4, the band will then proceed to Holland for the Africa Festival Hertme on July 10.
San Marino Festival in Italy on 14 July is next on the band’s tour list before the Colours Festival Ostrava in Tchequia on 17 July.
On 22 July, Makoomba will perform in Spain at the Pirineos Festival before their last show at the Imagine Festival Trondheim in Sweden which is taking place between July 30 and August 2. The band will then return to Zimbabwe on August 5.
Muzaza who is the band leader and lead vocalist was upbeat about the tour saying that they (Makoomba) were planning to thrill audiences in Europe as a way of expressing honour for being allowed to share the stage with some of the world’s best live performers.
“We are going to raise the Zimbabwean flag high like we did last year and I am sure Zigzag will invite us again next year for the European tours,” said Muzaza at their farewell party held yesterday at the Music Crossroads base in Hatfield. Mathias Bangure the National Coordinator of Music Crossroads, the only Zimbabwean music initiative that has seen local upcoming bands perform in Europe over the past five years said that it is an honour that the group has been recalled to perform in Europe.
“It is a very big honour for Makoomba to be recalled to perform in Europe because it has never happened before,” he said
“All the other musicians that have gone to perform in Europe on our account have never been called back.”
Makoomba band members come from Victoria Falls save for one who is from Binga.
Their lyrics are vernacular languages like Lutani, Tonga, Shona and Ndebele.
