The Zimbabwe Media Commission on Wednesday evening announced that it had approved the application for NewsDay.

Newsday is owned by Alpha Media Holdings.

Other independent newspapers whose registration has been approved include Daily News, Daily Gazette and the Daily Mail.

The ZCTU had applied to have its newspaper turned from a monthly to a weekly.

The application was granted.

“Licences will be issued at any time,” said ZMC Chairman Godfrey Majonga.

For more than a year Zimbabwe’s unity government has been stalling on agreements to open up the constricted media space.

Last week Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai promised there would be new publications on the street this week.

The development has come after relentless pressure from rights groups and progressive countries.
