Gay activists remanded in custody

Magistrate Munamato Mutevedzi on Wednesday remanded two gay activists in custody.

Ellen Chademana and Ignatius Muhambi, both employed by Gays and Lesbians Association of Zimbabwe (GALZ), were arrested on Friday after a police raid.

They are being accused of possessing pornographic material.

Chademana told the court that she was a married woman with a 10 year old child. Both Muhambi and Chademana said they had been tortured during their detention.

The pair complained that they had been forced to pretend they were sitting on chairs. They had to maintain the uncomfortable position for a very long time.

Apart from enduring the painful posture, Muhambi said his knees were bashed with empty soft drink bottles.

Defense lawyers Dzimbabwe Chimbga and David Hofisi said their clients were pleading not guilty to the charges.

Magistrate Mutevedzi remanded the pair in custody to Thursday for a bail hearing.
