Rugby boss distances self from 'deal' with Dominus

The Zimbabwe Rugby Union (ZRU) president Themba Sibanda has distanced himself from recent reports that his union has entered into partnership with a Harare-based sports event management company, Dominus Sport.

Sibanda said he had only read about the alleged partnership in the press.

The reports alleged that the ZRU, in conjunction with Zimbabwe Sevens management headed by Bruce Hobson, had entered into negotiations with Dominus Sport.

Professing ignorance over the development, Sibanda told NewsDay that he would seek audience with Hobson to find the truth.

“They have not approached us (ZRU) we understand that they have been in contact with the management of the Sevens national team and we hope to hear from them soon if the deal materialises,” Sibanda said.

Dominus Sport works with various sporting disciplines in event management, marketing and sourcing sponsorship.

Early this year, Dominus successfully organised the inaugural Stanbic Bank Twenty20 cricket tournament for Zimbabwe Cricket.

The Sevens team manager Hobson said he had not overlooked the mother body ZRU as the deal with Dominus was still in its infancy.

“As the Sevens national team representatives, we met with Dominus after they had shown interest in marketing our brand name and we are confident that this will help us to secure sponsorship for the local game,” said Hobson.

“I must emphasise that we have not overlooked ZRU because we will obviously need their support as they are the responsible authorities in Zimbabwean rugby. We will approach them when we have a plan in place to present to them,” said Hobson.
