Occupied banana estate wins award

Matanuska (Pvt) LTD, which is on the verge of losing a huge banana plantation to a retired army general, has won an international award for good corporate leadership and quality products.

The Business Initiative Directions (BID) is awarded to companies or organisations from all over the world for excellent corporate leadership and quality products.

“Matanuska has been designated to receive the International Star for Leadership in Quality Award in the Gold category in Paris,” BID president and chief executive, Jose Prieto said in a letter to Matanuska.

The award presentation ceremony will be held in the French capital, Paris on April 19 this year.

The award comes at a time when the future of Matanuska’s Zimbabwean project, Fangundu Farm, hangs in the balance.

Retired major general, Edzai Chimonyo, who is also Zimbabwe’s ambassador to Tanzania, seized the banana plantation in Burma Valley, south-east of Mutare last Christmas.

The occupation of the farm is being contested at the High Court. Last year the High Court ordered Chimonyo to vacate the property but he appealed against the ruling.
